Welcome – thanks for sharing your build and joining Lazy Rat Rod Site – we have a member in Australia doing the same build, I expect you will get some questions once he see’s your pictures.

What body are you planning on using? Will you be using the standard running gear?

right, no one laugh. this is how far i’ve got with the body. first time at doing this.
got one door outer frame in hole, need to get more steel for other side.
got the cowl and front bulk head to start yet, which i think will change the looks making it not seem so wide.

got two panels on rear of cab, plenty more strengthening pieces to be fitted. will look similar to a ford model A cab rear. but higher and slightly bigger window.

Don’t think anyone will laugh at your build, its looking great, the out line of the model A is very clear.
Totally agree with you how time consuming welding and fabrication on a body can be, just came back in from welding the rear C post on my Rat, 3 hrs just went by.
Keep us updated with your progress, post as many photos as you wish, this is why I built this site, for our members to share.
Will be posting the roof chop of my build, like you this is my first time doing body work, sure this will make you laugh.

Keep up the great work……..Lazy

Just been looking at your new build, looking good so far, just thought I would ask a couple of questions as I am thinking of building a Ratrod but am unsure where to start.
Are you going to keep it 4wd? What engine and gearbox are you going to use? how are you going to register it? will it be a modifies landrover? do you have the landrover log book?

Sorry about about all the questions, just interested.

Thanks for your help in advance….Eric

hi,

i’ll try to answer. going to be 2wd(different size tyres front to rear) got a 2.5 landy diesel to pick up, will do for a start, might stick a turbo on it!!!! lol.

going to be registered as a rebody. got all the forms here and seems straight forward enough to do.

any more questions just ask and i’ll try to answer.

cheers chris.

went and picked the engine that will be in it for a while, landrover 2.5na diesel, not the quickest but needs must.

80mile round trip with it in back of an astra was a bit of an experiance.

me and the boy managed to get it in the engine bay tonight, sits further back than i expected, but i can live with that. need to sort engine mounts.

and find a gearbox.

need to find out how people deal with engine mounts putting a 2.5 (90 swb) into a swb series chassis. i think you change chassis mount on o/s and space them up by about 2″, then the battery tray can stay, cutaway at moment to allow engine to sit roughly in place.

Hi, Your Rat is coming on at leaps and bounds, keep up the great work.
You mentioned you might keep it in red primer and clear coat it, I am no paint expert, but I have seen some fantastic paint finishes on Rats where the base coat is red primer, then it is painted in another couple of colours, yellow and top coat green looked good.
Then all you do is rub it down in a few places so it goes down to the red primer, the feathering reveals all the other colours. It makes it look old and weathered, then a coat of clear coat.

Just an idea……Lazy

Nice to see you back working on the Rat, making progress.
Sometimes you need to take time out when other stuff is going on or it starts to become a bit of a chore.Every now and again I get bored and don’t want to go outside and work on my Rat. I have a talk to myself and think why I am doing this build, for the enjoyment of building and driving the completed car.

Is the angle on the cab bent 5 bar floor plate, of can you buy it as a length? looks great, might have to copy you a bit and put some on my rat.

See ya……..Lazy

got passenger door frame made and hung, also made decision to have slidy windows.

the door skin(2mm) will overlap onto body, with a small rubber seal behind. the hinges allow this.

the skin will move away from body when door opens.

Wy don’t you build a 4×4, this will keep the mechanical work to a minium.Keep it as low as you can, this would look fantastic.
And the bonus is that you can register it as a rebody….win win.
